Well, I haven’t posted any updates in quite some time, so it looks like today is the day.
Firstly, I have the privilege of announcing that I will be working with Dr. Carol Thompson as my Research Rookies mentor. I will be doing work in the field of crystallography. My research entails analyzing images of indium nitride nano-crystals on a gallium nitride substrate. I will be using the Environmental Scanning Electron Microscope and the Atomic Force Microscope to take and compare images. The ESEM is able to see facets that the AFM is unable to see; quite useful for analyzing the morphology of the crystals. Dr. Thompson will be taking the images from the AFM while I will be imaging the crystals with the ESEM.
Originally, Dr. Thompson gave me two topics to pick from. Of the two topics/projects, I chose this one for the practical experience. This project is certainly not easy by any stretch, but it’s certainly not over my head. I understand the ideas behind the project and I think it will be a lot of fun. I’m not too nervous about starting the actual research, but I do feel a little unprepared. I have a lot of reading and learning to do before next semester starts. But I love learning, so I don’t think that that’s going to be a problem. I’m just excited to start. 🙂
